In this article, we’ll discuss everything you need to apply for express entry programs. Let’s get started.

What is the Express Entry?

Express Entry is an immigration system managed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The immigration system is designed to bring in skilled workers from outside Canada.

The applicants apply for express entry through an online system. IRCC receives and manages applications through three federal economic immigration programs. The immigration programs are;

  1. Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
  2. Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
  3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Along with these three programs, several Provincial Nomination Programs are associated with express entry.

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

The FSW program aims young applicants with skilled work experience, a high level of education, and language proficiency. The candidate has to adapt to the Canadian lifestyle. It doesn’t require any connection to Canada. So, the skilled worker can apply for this program without Canadian education and work experience.

Federal Skilled Trades (FST)

The FST program aims applicants who hold work experience in any of the reputed Canadian companies. It requires minimal educational qualification and language proficiency. But the candidate must have;

  • A valid job offer from Canadian employers.
  • A qualification certificate to practice their trade in any of the Canadian provinces.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The CEC program aims applicants who hold Canadian work experience. The candidate must have at least 12 months of work experience within the last three years. It is best for international graduates who are working with a Post-Graduation Work Permit. Also, the candidates can be a temporary foreign worker.

Eligibility Criteria for Express Entry Programs

The candidates must be eligible for any of these three programs for express entry. These programs contain several requirements which an applicant has to meet.

  • Skill Level

The applicant must have skilled work experience to apply for one of three programs. The government of Canada uses the NOC (National Occupation Classification) system to evaluate the skill level. According to the NOC database, skill level 0, A, or B meets skilled work experience requirements.

  • Work Experience

Immigrants with prior work experience can apply for express entry programs. The candidates must have at least 12-months of full time or an equal amount of part-time work experience. Besides, each program has some certain guidelines.

  • Language Requirement

In each express entry program, the applicant must have proficiency in English or French. The degree of skill in any of the two Canadian languages varies between programs.

  • Basic Acceptability

The candidate must meet basic Canada’s basic admissibility requirement to become a permanent resident. It means the candidate should not have any criminal background or medical conditions.

How Does Immigration Through Express Entry Works?

If the applicant meets the eligibility criteria of express-entry programs, they have to submit an online profile. The online profile is identified as an Expression of Interest (EOI).

The express entry programs are merit-based. It means the applicants are ranked against one another by using CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System). After creating an online profile, the candidate will get a CRS score. Each profile remains active for 12 months. The applicant can update it with new information.

However, the Canadian government conducts an express entry draws in every two weeks. The candidates with the highest rank will get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. If a candidate receives an ITA, they have to move on to the next stage.

The applicants who get an ITA have to submit a full application with processing fees. The application should be submitted within 60 days. And, the federal government takes around six months to complete PR applications.

What if a candidate doesn’t receive an ITA?

If a candidate doesn’t receive an ITA within 12-months of file opening, they have to create a new profile. It means the candidates are still eligible to apply for permanent resident status.
